The Minimal Investor is a course with one goal for everyone who takes it:
After taking this course, you'll know enough to confidently invest for the rest of your life.
The way to get there is to learn how investments work - stocks, bonds, taxes the different account types. Anyone can become a minimal investor, and it takes less work than you'd think!
A Minimal Investor is someone who…
- Understands the why behind every investment they’re invested in.
- Invests in the minimal number of funds needed for diversification.
- Reduces financial advisor fees to their minimum.
- Reduces expense ratio fees to their minimum.
- Reduces time spent thinking about and organizing investments to a minimum.
- Reduces taxes to their minimum.
The result of learning how to invest within these simple guidelines is that you’ll only be invested in things you know and understand why you’d want to invest in them. You’ll know you aren’t getting ripped off because you understand every investment.
Even more importantly, you’ll know enough about investing to confidently invest for the rest of your life in this minimal style.
Your Instructor
For the last 8 years, I've helped millions of people learn to code at Code School and Pluralsight. During that time, one underlying interest of mine outside of coding was investing.
After inheriting $100,000 at age 24 when my mom passed away, I went down a rabbit hole of banks, investment advisors, scammy funds, high fees and more – all while learning the ropes on how to invest responsibly.
What I learned is that most of the best advice out there is often hard to find, or drowned out by the mountains of misleading advice for people who want you to invest in their stocks, or will earn a commission from your choices.
What I'll promise with this course is that every single thing here is something I do now, did in the past, or plan to do in the future. I share all my personal investments on my blog to be fully transparent in my motivations here: to help you learn how to invest.
I'm not a certified financial planner, financial advisor, CPA or attorney. All information in this course should not be considered personal or professional advice on investing. This is an account of how I personally invest, with the hope of helping educate others on the subject, but all decisions you make are you own.
"I have been taking your Minimal Investor Course and have to tell you that it has been the single most helpful thing with gaining understanding and confidence around personal investing.
Im fairly new (<1 year) to investing of any kind, so much of the nomenclature has been quite confusing. I love how your course breaks things down not only systematically but also semantically."

Why Learn How to Invest?
Learning how to invest is one of the most valuable skills you can learn. Even just getting the basics of investing down – the not-so-sexy parts – you can potentially retire years earlier. The reason for this comes down to one thing: fees.
Fees are a hidden killer of portfolios everywhere. How big an impact will fees have on your portfolio? Here's a look at how fees could impact your portfolio over 30 years.
Robo-advisors | Traditional Advisor | Minimal Investor | |
---|---|---|---|
Initial Investment | $100,000 | $100,000 | $100,000 |
Average Fees | 0.52% | 2% | 0.08% |
Total Fees | -$106,869 | -$337,592 | -$19,200 |
% Lost to Fees | -14% | -44.3% | -2.5% |
Estimated balance in 30 years | $654,356 | $423,633 | $743,751 |
When I first looked at the impact of fees over time I was floored. The total amount that I would have was almost double that with an advisor. I had to do the math multiple times to make sure it checked out. The difference between investing on your own and investing with an advisor will be the difference in how many years you need to work.
That's important enough to repeat:
The difference between investing on your own and investing with an advisor will be the difference in how many years you need to work.So tell me, would you rather learn how to invest or retire years earlier, or rely on someone else that charges a higher fee and work longer?
